What is the story behind your brand?
See Rose Go started during a casual afternoon conversation with a friend about fashion. Our friend, who wears a size US 16, stated, “You have no idea what it’s like to shop for my body.” That was an emotional moment for us and we talked more about her experiences getting dressed in the morning and how poor wardrobe options could affect her emotionally, making her late or even setting off negative vibes that impacted the rest of her day. This conversation affected both of us deeply. We stepped back and asked ourselves why there wasn’t more well-made, stylish clothing for modern women who happen to wear plus sizes? We started reaching out to more and more women wearing plus size clothing to talk about their experiences and needs, what was missing, what they wanted. The responses were both alarming and enlightening. Overall, the needs were consistent: better quality and construction, a considered fit, and cool, versatile style. It was then we realized that we could draw on our unique experience in sportswear and fashion to meet those needs. We keep these insights at the very center of everything we do. At See Rose Go, we want to see all women feeling beautiful and fearless in their lives.
Why this focus?
We believe all types of women are beautiful. The woman who follows her ambitions and is passionate about what she does. It’s about her story and what makes her go. We are inspired by the creative dreamer and the determined doer – Her label size doesn’t dictate who she is or what she is capable of! Because we believe in her and want to see her go, we stand for our design ethos of Quality, Fit, and Style. We both have extensive backgrounds in design, merchandising and marketing, and appreciate the importance of understanding the mindset of the customer and her true needs. From the beginning, we connected with women wearing plus sizes to share what they felt was missing. After many conversations through intimate coffee dates, Skype calls, focus groups, fitting sessions and wear tests. We were able to gather hundreds of insights that we keep at the core of everything we do at See Rose Go.
Are you self-taught/passion driven or did you go to school for this?
All of the above! Co-founder Yi Zhou attended design fashion academy in Amsterdam and has worked for global brands in Europe, Hong Kong, and NYC throughout her 20+ years in the fashion industry. Co-founder Erin Cavanaugh has been in the fashion industry for 20+ years, leading product teams at Nordstrom, Nike, and Converse.
What or Who is your style/design inspiration?
Our customers and the women we encounter every day inspire us! Through all our discussions, we realize that modern multi-dimensional women have so much in common, independent of the size labels. We all want quality, fit and style, and See Rose Go is committed to offering our customer a modern wardrobe in which she can go out and achieve with confidence. Creating clothing is a humbling endeavor, and when you can create a piece that helps a woman feel her best, so she can then go out and change the world, the potential effect is incredible and certainly a driving factor!
What has been the biggest success of your brand, to date?
Beginning an active conversation with women wearing plus size, hearing the feedback and creating clothing based on these conversations. Our open dialog has led us to provide technical design details fused with fashion for women wearing plus size.
What would be one of the biggest style myths in Plus Size or Big & Tall Fashion?
The long-time notion that women wearing plus size “look a certain way,” or are “not willing to pay for quality” is shortsighted. When we asked one woman where she shops, her response was, “Where do I shop? Or, where do I WANT to shop?” We think about this all the time. It drives us to create clothing that suits personal effortless style and for See Rose Go to be a place where women want to shop!
How do you think the plus size industry has grown over the years?
Since launching See Rose Go, we’ve seen more brands embracing and carrying extended sizes. There are new plus-size retail platforms launching and we are seeing more diverse-size models in advertising campaigns. NYFW continues to become more inclusive and hosts events and panel discussions to further the education of the industry. These are great advancements and, ultimately, will lead the plus size segment through healthier and balanced growth.
