Meet 2018 TCFStyle Vendor, Selah Boutique!
With the expo coming August 11th, we thought it was time to introduce you some of the vendors coming to share their fashion and products with us. It’s always exciting to see brands and vendors, large and small come from all over to the TCFStyle Expo. That’s why today’s we present you our first vendor spotlight of the year. We are happy to introduce contemporary plus size brand, Selah Boutique.
Brand Name: Selah Boutique
Years In Business: 3.5 years in business
What type of business? Apparel / Accessories
What is the story behind your brand?
Selah-(sel-uh) noun. Stop and listen, amen, used in reflection at the end of scripture, an indication of pause Created in a moment of reflection and commune with God, I created the Selah brand. I left a 14-year career in law enforcement to care for my mother suffering from dementia. The care of my mother made working a regular nine to five almost impossible. In January 2018 my beloved mother and motivator lost her long and fierce fight with dementia and passed away.
After her passing the Selah purpose changed from livelihood to becoming a legacy that would make my mother proud. The absence of my mother made time for me jump wholeheartedly into my business, and go from identifying myself as a caregiver first and fashion professional second to identifying as a whole entrepreneur. With the help of my husband Derick and creative designer cousin Kristal Tyrell, Selah remains and stands the test of time, when others did not.
SELAH has forever held its purpose of providing clothes for ALL women of every shape and size.
Why this focus?
I always had a hard time finding cute trendy clothes like my smaller friends, plus I needed a flexible source of employment during my mother’s illness,
What inspired you to get into fashion?
I’ve always loved clothes and putting outfits together; my closet is the “pre-game” dress up spot. I was always known for my style. My mother was a “Curvy Fashionista” herself.
Are you self-taught/passion driven or did you go to school for this?
I am self-taught in fashion. But I do have an educational background in graphic design and visual art. My husband/ partner has studied business.
What or Who is your style/design inspiration?
Iris Apfel( I love accessory layering), Jackie Onassis, Beyoncé, Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld,
What has been the biggest success of your brand, to date?
Going from 500 followers to 24K+ in 9 months, My acceptance and showcase at FFFWeek ’17 and acceptance to FFFWeek ’18.
What would be one of the biggest style myths in Plus Size or Big & Tall Fashion?
Our clothing must be loose and shapeless to “give us room,” “cover it up” We can wear the latest trends event tailored and fitted ones (proper shapewear is the key)
How do you think the plus size industry has grown over the years?
Exponentially, I remember the days of Catherine’s and when mail order catalogs were our go-to for plus fashion and looks were limited. Now retailers cater to us and seek us. Almost every popular retailer has a plus size offset with comparable styles to their straight size section. It’s the norm now, and the selection range from conservative to risque.’
Have you attended or vended at the expo before? If not, tell us your past experiences, if so, let us know what you are looking forward to!
Yes vended before. I’m looking forward to the sales, TFCStyle Expo attendees are true shoppers, meeting new models and industry insiders
What can the attendees of the TCFStyle Expo look forward to seeing from you?
New trendy apparel looks and more maxi skirts and more ultra plus this year 4X-6X will be represented well; we ran out quickly last year we won’t miss those sales this year.
