Body image issues have long plagued the plus community. Until recently, the focus has been mainly on women. Many people have no idea that men have many of the same body image and self-esteem issues. For men, we are taught not to share our feelings and not to talk about anything that may be perceived as “weak” or as a “woman’s issue.” This causes many men to suffer in silence for fear of being ridiculed. It’s about time to have the discussion on male body image and self-esteem, and not just as it relates to the big & tall male models. We don’t all want to wear oversized plaid shirts and oversized jeans. We want to look fashionable and be able to be comfortable too! Key takeaways include:
- An understanding of how big & tall men feel when it comes to self-esteem, body image, and not being represented in ad campaigns, on television, etc.
- Help men and young boys remove the fear of discussing body image and self-esteem.
- The importance of clothing options for men. Not every man wants to be a model, but we all want our clothes to look nice and not cost an arm and a leg just because we need bigger sizes.
